There have not always been the four main Clans you see today. In fact, there were five, with Foxclan being the fifth. They were TwilightClan (Shadeclan), EclipseClan (Dewclan), DuskClan (Duskclan), DawnClan (Hazeclan), and EveningClan (Foxclan). They, for the most part, lived in harmony, and kept to themselves.
But then, as fate would have it, EveningClan betrayed the other four. The then current Leader, Firestar, attracted a new predator to the other Clans; Wolves. A couple of wolves had roamed across the lands and finally settled not far from the Clans. When they reproduced, Firestar found a perfect opportunity to end the other Clans and gain control over them all.
It was a cruel, bloody war. The wolves, seven in whole at the time, had managed to kill several cats from each Clan - except for EveningClan of course. Nobody knew who brought in the wolves at first. DuskClan, the most traditional Clan, believed it to be a punishment from CelestialClan. DawnClan and TwilightClan believed they were each at fault, and went to war with each other. EclipseClan eventually fell to believe that DuskClan had done it and was just covering it up with the whole CelestialClan theory. So they too went to war. And as all four of the Clans battled and killed each other, EveningClan watched on.
Eventually, after several more moons of bloodshed, EveningClan traitors came to tell the truth to the Clans. There were four in total. Hazecloud, Shadeflower, Dewpuddle, and the leader of the group, Foxstripe. They visited all four of the Clans. They then announced that for the betrayel, they would not be allowed back into their original home. EclipseClan, Dawnclan, and TwilightClan all offered one cat asylum each, except DuskClan. The leader and cats of DuskClan, being as traditional as they were, could not forgive the EveningClan warriors, even if they had just stopped two giant wars. Foxstripe, in a fit of anger about this, went back to his home. He lied and said he followed the other three and heard them tell the other Clans a truth. But he was too late.
Soon after, all four of the main Clans sent groups of cats to drive out EveningClan. Most of the cats on all sides were killed or horribly injured. Foxstripe, still angry, led EveningClan survivors away, while the last stayed to fight and die for EveningClan.
In the end, EveningClan was demolished entirely. The other four Clans mutually agreed that it was time to rebuild. All of them had been ravaged by both wolves and war, and they all (except for DuskClan) decided to not only rebuild, but recreate themselves. DawnClan rewarded it's asylumed EveningClanner by renaming their Clan Hazeclan. TwilightClan and DawnClan both approved of this action, and renamed themselves Dewclan and Shadeclan. Only DuskClan remained the same in name, telling the other Clans it would not change it's name over a tragedy, and that they feared CelestialClan would be angry.
Meanwhile, as this happened, Foxstripe settled his survivors down not far from the other Clans. The survivors all immediately voted him Leader, which he accepted. But he refused to name himself Foxstar. He considered his new Clan to be an exile, and refused to let them try to introduce themselves into the four Clans again. He renamed himself Foxspirit, the new suffix in his name a mock to both the four other leaders, and his demolished home. In memory of him, the Clan named themselves FoxClan, just as the other Clans had named themselves Hazeclan, Dewclan, and Shadeclan.
Now we are caught in the present. It has been two full years since the tragedy. Most of the cats that survived the wars have died, or retired, and only they hold the memories of those awful moons. New leaders have risen in each of the Clans, including Foxclan. And with new power comes new ambitions, new pacts, and new adventures.
